3-Drug Lethal Injection Sequence

1. Anesthetic

Prevents pain.

  • usually barbiturates or benzodiazepines
  • conventionally sodium thiopental (Pentothal)
  • some common substitutes: pentobarbital, midazolam

2. Paralytic Agent

Masks the appearance of suffering.

  • disables voluntary movement, speech, and expression
  • no effect on consiousness or ability to feel pain
  • examples: pancuronium bromide (Pavulon), vecuronium bromide (Norcuron)
  • places a "chemical veil" between the condemned and witnesses by preventing motor manifestations of physiological processes that can be perceived as unpleasant or experiences of suffering. (i.e. makes the execution appear peaceful regardless of the condemned's actual experience)

3. Potassium Chloride

Causes death.

  • causes death within a minute of injection
  • extremely painful if administered without proper anesthesia

1-Drug Lethal Injection

Substances

  1. Pentobarbital:
    • causes respiratory arrest in high doses
  2. Saline Solution:
    • ensures delivery of drug to the condemned
    • prevents blockages & precipitation in IV lines

Protocol

  1. Group A: Primary Injection
    1. ≥ 2.5 g pentobarbital + 1.25 g saline solution
    2. ≥ 2.5 g pentobarbital + 1.25 g saline solution
    3. ≥ 60 mL saline solution
  2. Group B: Reserves/Secondary Injection
    • exact repeat of Group A
    • administered only if Group A turns out to be insufficient
